Chicago Triangle “Emergence” 1978 US ultra rare Private Psych Hard Rock AOR Among the many edifying projects undertaken by local music-scene Renaissance man Steve Krakow (aka Plastic Crimewave and, less formally, “Psychedelic Steve”) is his illustrated Reader column called the Secret History of Chicago Music, which tells the stories of forgotten or unheralded artists he thinks should’ve been better known. A couple of those acts are in town and making music today, and they’re helping celebrate Secret History’s tenth anniversary tonight at the Empty Bottle. Presented by Permanent Records, the show doubles as a release party for headliners the Chicago Triangle, whose once-elusive self-released 1977 debut, Emergence, is getting the reissue treatment from Permanent. Its charmingly frayed and fluid mix of eerie organ, jazz-influenced drumming, and psychedelic guitar riffs sounds dated but hardly obsolete—the heavy “In Memory of King Tut” is vaguely Sabbathy late-60s proto-metal. Vyto Baleska, aka Vyto B, is the other Secret History subject on the bill, and he’ll draw from a body of hard-to-find and unreleased songs that he’s been working on since the 60s. I’m hoping Vyto plays some tracks from his genre-hopping 1976 concept album, Tricentennial 2076; the dreamy, acoustic “Electronic Enforcer” is the sort of otherworldly trip that inspires obsessive collectors to keep digging. Krakow is also on the bill too, in the dark, spacey duo Werewheels. —Leor Galil
